Nervous dermatitis: what you should know about the disease
Neurodermatitis usually begins with nervous overload and very quickly becomes a chronic problem.
Red spots on the neck, chest, arms and legs, in the groin. They do not add beauty and cause constant discomfort. Once this disease was called stress rash, nervous dermatitis. In our difficult time, many people experience symptoms of this disease. — Neurodermatitis is based on an incorrect, inadequate reaction of the immune system to active substances responsible for vascular tone and blood flow, — says Zhanna Prykhodko, a dermatologist.
— The result of this is an inflammatory process with the release of histamine. This neurotransmitter transmits signals between nerve cells. Its excessive concentration increases the sensitivity of the skin. Doctors have long noticed that the appearance of symptoms of nervous dermatitis is preceded by stress, prolonged psycho-emotional stress. Later, it was studied that all this contributes to the activation of nerve fibers of the skin. Itching appears, which intensifies at night and sometimes becomes unbearable – the patient causes mechanical damage to himself, constantly scratching the affected areas. If a bacterial or fungal infection gets into the wounds, the skin becomes red, rough.
Of course, not every person who is overexcited develops neurodermatitis. It is known that its development is associated with metabolic disorders, a genetic predisposition to allergic reactions, endocrine disorders, and the presence of parasites in the intestine. The disease usually has a chronic course with periods of remission. But after a temporary recovery, unfortunately, an exacerbation occurs again if the disease is not treated systematically and competently.
— How to do it correctly?
— First of all, a thorough diagnosis is required: dermatoscopy of the affected areas, allergy tests and tests for the level of immunoglobulins, if necessary, a skin biopsy to exclude other diseases. And for treatment, hormonal (corticosteroid) ointments, creams with panthenol, moisturizers are used. Antihistamines are also prescribed, and if necessary, phototherapy (UV radiation). Lifestyle correction is also important: eliminating allergens, proper skin care, stabilizing the emotional state. Among the preventive measures are the use of hypoallergenic cosmetics and household chemicals, proper nutrition with the exclusion of potential allergens. A diet with a restriction of carbohydrates, salt, smoked and spicy foods, and alcoholic beverages is also important.
— Is neurodermatitis contagious?
— Fortunately, not. At the same time, several people in one family can be sick, because the pathology is usually hereditary. Children of parents who have asthma or allergic rhinitis have an increased risk of developing neurodermatitis.
